Outdoor Christmas Lights

Icicle, net and string Christmas light styles for outside

Choose icicle lights if you want that dripping-ice look along a roofline or gutter edge, or go with net lights for even coverage over a hedge or small bush without needing to style individual strands. For total lighting flexibility, choose string lights, which drape easily along fences, wrap around trunks, or stretch between fixed points.

Choose outdoor tree lights specifically, with their heavier-gauge cord, if you're wrapping an outdoor tree or large shrub because indoor strings aren't built to handle the extra length and conditions. Pick your style based on where it's going, rather than what looks most elaborate in a photo, for a better result once it's actually installed.

Mounting Christmas lights along the roofline and eaves

Use small clips or hooks designed to grip the gutter edge if you're mounting lights along the roofline or eaves to avoid nails or adhesive altogether. Run lights along the fascia, rather than up and over the roof itself, if you want the safer and more accessible option without needing a ladder to reach higher points. Measure the roofline length before buying so you don't end up short partway through installation, and keep the transformer or plug end easily accessible after mounting to make it simpler to switch the display on and off each evening.

Add our LED Christmas lights for a lower-running-cost option along the roofline.

Choosing between mains, solar and LED Christmas light options

Choose mains-powered lights if you want the most consistent brightness and the longest run time each evening, providing there's a power point within reach of the display. Go solar instead if a nearby power point isn't an option, as these rely on a daily charge from a panel positioned in direct sun rather than a plug. Pick LEDs for large displays left on for hours each night, as they deliver the same brightness as older incandescent styles while using significantly less power. Mixing power types across a single display works well, too, using solar for garden beds and mains for anything closer to the house.

Frequently asked questions

How do I attach outdoor Christmas lights without damaging gutters?

Purpose-made gutter clips grip the edge without piercing or bending the metal. Avoid using nails, screws or strong adhesive directly on gutters or fascia boards.

Can outdoor Christmas lights be run through an extension cord?

Yes, an outdoor-rated extension cord can extend the reach of a display to a power point further from the house.

Do outdoor Christmas lights need to be taken down immediately after the season?

There's no fixed rule on timing, though many households remove outdoor lights in January once the festive period ends. Leaving weatherproof lights up longer generally doesn't cause damage, provided they're switched off when not in use.

Does Temple & Webster sell outdoor Christmas lights in different colour temperatures?

Yes, outdoor light ranges include warm white, cool white and multicolour options across most styles. Warm white tends to suit a more traditional display, while cool white and multicolour give a brighter, more modern look.
