Why a multi-light pendant works in the home
A multi-light pendant gives you the impact of several fixtures from a single ceiling point, ideal over a dining table, kitchen island or stairway. Multi-pendant lights spread illumination evenly across a longer surface than a single shade can.
Cluster styles drop several bulbs from a single canopy; linear bars line them up in a row. For broader ambient lighting, layer with flush mount ceiling lights.
Sizing and hanging height for multi light pendant lighting
Over a dining table, hang the bottom of the pendant 75 to 90cm above the table top. Over a kitchen bench, 75 to 85cm above the surface works well so the shades don't block sightlines.
Total fixture width should be roughly two-thirds the length of the table. Pair with side lighting from our wall sconces range and a floor lamp for a fully lit room.
Mixing pendant lighting styles with other lighting options
A multi-light pendant is the visual anchor of the room, so let it lead the metal palette: brass with warm timber, black or chrome with cooler tones. Combine with a ceiling fan on the same circuit if airflow is a priority, or with outdoor wall lights outside for a coherent indoor-outdoor scheme.
Frequently asked questions
How high should a multi-light pendant hang?
Over a table, 75 to 90cm above the surface. From the floor in a stairwell or entry, keep at least 210cm clearance underneath.
How wide should a pendant be for a dining table?
Around two-thirds of the length of the table. A 180cm table suits a 100 to 120cm wide pendant or three smaller shades spaced across the length.
Can I dim a multi-light pendant?
Most LED-compatible pendants work with a dimmer switch if all the bulbs are dimmable LEDs. Confirm both the bulb and switch are compatible.
Does a multi-light pendant need a junction box?
Yes, ceiling pendants connect to the existing ceiling rose or junction box. An electrician can fit a new one if there isn't one in the right spot.
How do I clean a multi-light pendant?
Turn the power off, then dust each shade with a microfibre cloth. Glass shades can be lifted off and washed; metal shades wipe down with a damp cloth.
