Mina Mina Jukurrpa (Mina Mina Dreaming) Mina Mina is an extremely important ceremonial site for Napangardi & Napanangka women, located west of Yuendumu near Lake Mackay.
The Mina Mina Jukurrpa holds cultural importance, depicting the roles of men & women in Warlpiri society. The custodians of this land are Napangardi/Napanangka women & Japangardi/Japanangka men, who represent various aspects of the Jukurrpa in their paintings.
The story follows ancestral women who journeyed from west to east, dancing at Mina Mina. They carried digging sticks, wore hairstring belts, feathers, & necklaces made of bean tree seeds. Anointing themselves with shiny fat, they gained ritual powers. As they travelled, a spotted nightjar followed them.
Their dancing created a dust cloud that influenced the snake ancestors. The women reached Yaturluyaturlu, intersecting with the witchetty grub Dreaming. They learned to cook witchetty grubs, passing through different places & battling ancestors. They split into two groups, one heading east & the other north.
Eventually, both groups returned to Mina Mina, their homesickness for desert oak country drawing them back. The story reveals the roles of men & women in Warlpiri culture & the reversal of gender roles in the past. Traditional iconography represents elements such as snakevine, desert truffles, & digging sticks in contemporary Warlpiri paintings.
