In Tiwi language, Jilamara means design. The designs are originally drawn from the body painting which accompanied the Pukumani (funeral) & Kulama (initiation/yam) ceremonies, clan totems & Tiwi creation stories. The Jilamara (design) is used for body painting to protect from Mapurtiti (spirits of the dead). The Tiwi palette of red, yellow, white & black is made from natural ochre pigments sourced from the land.

About the Designer
Russellina Puruntatameri
Russellina Puruntatameri is a proud Tiwi woman from the Tiwi Islands, which is 80km north of Darwin. Russellina developed her artistic skills from her family at the Munupi Arts Centre, where she grew up in Pirlangimpi. Her paintings highlight the importance of keeping the Tiwi culture strong for children so they can learn the culture, stories, dances, language and art.
