Choosing the right throw blanket

A throw blanket is the easiest layering piece in the home, either draped on a sofa for texture, folded at the end of a bed, or wrapped around you on a chilly night. Wool feels weighty and warm; cotton is breathable for summer; chunky knits add visual texture as much as warmth.

Aim for around 130 x 180cm for a sofa throw, and 150 x 200cm for a bed throw. Pair with cushions from our cushion collection for a coordinated palette.

How to style throw blankets at home

Drape one diagonally over an armrest rather than folding it neatly, so the fabric breaks up the line of the sofa. Layer two textures on a bed: try a flat woven blanket folded across the foot with a softer throw on top.

For a warmer floor underfoot, our shag rugs and Scandinavian rugs anchor the room with the same soft layering principle.

Caring for throws and blankets

Check the label first: most cotton and acrylic throws machine-wash on cool, while wool and mohair usually need hand-washing or dry cleaning. Always dry flat to keep the shape.

Mix and match patterns across your room for personality. A geometric throw works well with our black and white rugs and a bold colour pop from our purple rugs range.

Frequently asked questions

What size throw blanket do I need?

Around 130 x 180cm works for a two-seater sofa, 150 x 200cm for a three-seater or a queen bed footer. Larger throws can double as a light blanket on the couch.

What's the warmest throw rug or blanket material?

Pure wool gives the most warmth for the weight. Mohair and alpaca are softer, lighter alternatives; chunky knit acrylic feels warm visually but doesn't insulate as well as natural fibres.

How do I wash a wool throw?

Most wool throws need cold hand-washing with a wool-safe detergent, then dried flat. Some are labelled for cool machine-wash on a wool cycle, but always check first.

Can I use a throw on my bed instead of a quilt?

A throw works as a top layer for warmer months. For real warmth in winter, layer it over a quilt or doona rather than using it alone.

How do I stop a throw blanket from slipping off the sofa?

Tuck one corner deep behind the back cushion, or drape it across the seat at an angle so part of it sits under your weight when you sit down.
