Cushions are the fastest way to refresh a sofa or bed without buying new furniture. For sofa cushions, go with feather or feather-down inserts for that broken-in slouch; foam-filled holds its shape better for daily use.

Throw cushions in mixed sizes add depth: 50 x 50cm as the base, 45 x 45cm in front, and a 30 x 50cm lumbar for the front. Add warmth nearby with our throw rugs and blankets.

Layering new cushions for pattern and texture

When you’re looking for a fresh style or to add visual appeal to a room, cushions are an ideal choice. Both functional and decorative, they’re ideal for easily and affordably sprucing up a room. Stick to a three-colour palette so the cushions look intentional rather than random. Mix textures more freely than colours, for example, linen with velvet, knit with smooth cotton.

Carry the same palette through to the bed with pillowcases and queen bed sheets.

Outdoor versus indoor cushions

Indoor cushions often use natural fibres and feather fills that don't handle weather. For an outdoor lounge or patio chairs, switch to outdoor cushions made with UV-stable fabric and quick-dry fill.

Frequently asked questions

How many cushions should I put on a sofa?

Three on a two-seater, five on a three-seater is a balanced rule. Use odd numbers for symmetry-with-personality and even numbers for a more formal look.

What's the best cushion insert?

Feather and feather-down feel luxurious but flatten and need regular plumping. Foam holds shape better for everyday seating. Hollow-fibre polyester is the most affordable and washes well.

Can I wash cushion covers?

Most removable covers machine-wash on cool. Always wash before first use, and air-dry to avoid shrinkage.

What size cushion fits a single bed?

Two 45 x 45cm cushions plus a 30 x 50cm lumbar is plenty. For a king bed, scale up to three 60 x 60cm cushions across the back.

How do I stop cushions from flattening?

Plump them daily by squeezing all sides. Rotate front-to-back weekly. Feather inserts respond best to a tumble in a dryer on a no heat mode once a month.
