I am using this in our music room to store tall music books. It is perfect for the use. I also have spare strings stored in the bottom drawer. The bookshelf did have a typical "Bali" style furniture laquer smell when first taken out of the cardboard box. But we let it air for a few days and I don't notice he smell any longer.
