The number 5 has always been considered extremely important in Japanese culture, especially in terms of food and dining. Called The Power of Five, it teaches that food should be enjoyed with all five senses, and as such, the dinnerware is sold in sets of five. The Komon range comprises five patterns: Yagasuri depicts fletching (the feathers of arrows), which signifies steadfastness and determination; Ishidatami is a chequerboard pattern that has been used for many, many years in different colourways; Seigaiha, 'blue ocean waves', is considered a symbol of peace, good luck and good fortune; Kanoki Shibori is small dot patterning produced by the ancient art of resist-dyeing; Asanoha is a geometric design of hemp leaves, long an important plant in Japan, representing growth and good health. The intricate patterning of Komon, in beautifully restrained black and white, is the perfect canvas for your food.
