The temperature may have dropped, but rattan is still weaving its magic as one of the hottest interiors trends for 2017. Our Temple & Webster style team shares their tips to warm up this look for winter with our gorgeous new rattan living collection.
Weave it in
The secret to doing the new rattan at home is to choose a couple of key pieces to mix with your basics. So choose the black wrap rattan lounge chair or coffee table to complement a neutral linen sofa, or dining chairs to go with a simple dining table. “The natural contours and shapes of rattan make a striking feature in a room,” says Allira Bell, T&W stylist.
Wintry tones
This new range adds dark metal and black accents to give rattan a moodier edge, rather than that summery tropical feel. “Rattan works really well with some of the season’s trend colours, like warm terracotta, olive green and dusty blues,” says T&W Head of Styling Jessica Bellef.
Layer it up
“Rattan is a great way to do winter styling without being too heavy,” says Allira. “You can layer it up for winter by throwing a blanket or sheepskin over a rattan chair, and adding a tray with some candles and decor to your coffee table.”
Cocktail hour
“We had lots of fun on set styling the bar cart and console for this shoot,” adds Jess. “Add a brass cocktail shaker or metallic decor, flowers, and some seasonal cocktail essentials such as citrus. You could even wheel the bar cart into the bedroom as a bedside table.
What's that weave?
Rattan is a palm-like vine, and its outer bark or cane is cut into strips of different widths before weaving, while the softer inner pith or reed is also used. Wicker refers to a particular furniture weaving technique, and wicker furniture can be made using a range of materials including rattan, straw, bamboo or synthetic materials for long-lasting outdoor furniture.
Care factor
Once you've brought home one of these gorgeous rattan pieces, how do you keep them looking their best? Dust them regularly using a microfibre cloth or bristle brush, or vacuum using the upholstery brush. Keep rattan furniture dry and indoors or out of direct sunlight undercover. If in need of a deeper clean, or if you're restoring a vintage rattan find, use a mild detergent or furniture cleaner to spot clean, making sure you allow the furniture to dry out properly afterwards.
