How to style indoor plants

The indoor plant craze isn't slowing down and is a great way to bring the outside inside. If you're going for live plants, you'll obviously need to consider access to natural light and watering routines when it comes to arrangement, but with artificial plants, you can have them anywhere in the home and create that lush green indoor jungle vibe without worrying about maintenance. Discover how to work plants into every room and fake it with our artificial plants and flowers.

Styling flowering plants

Single stem orchids like these phalaenopsis work well in pairs. These flowers are a classic way to make an impact in an entryway or on a console table. Keep it symmetrical; orchids work really well in pairs. Alternatively, use a single pot in a bathroom or on your bedside table. Cluster them with other smaller plants or trailing vines to create a lush habitat and make a statement.

Styling tropical foliage

When it comes to palms and large-leaf plants such as rubber plants and the ubiquitous fiddle leaf fig, think corners and clusters. Choose either one larger plant, or group a few in a variety of heights. It's the easiest way to decorate an empty space and bring in a feeling of the outdoors.

How to choose pots for your plants

Choose pots based on the feeling that you want to create in the room. For example, large plants are suited well to woven baskets if you want an island resort vibe, or go for oversized black or polished concrete vessels for a modern touch. Not only do bigger pots keep big plants in styling proportion, but they also help with balance and stopping the plants from toppling over. When choosing pots, stick to a particular colour scheme to keep your plants cohesive. Mix and match hand-carved or patterned pots with plain ones to add some contrast and excitement.

Styling small succulents

Succulents are perfect for a coffee table or dining table as they bring interesting form and colour without adding height to interrupt the flow of conversation or your view of the TV. Choose a large shallow vessel and plant it with a few different varieties, or use individual plants in small containers and group them together.

Styling ferns

No shelfie would be complete without a hint of green. Delicate maidenhair ferns and trailing plants are perfect as they soften the defined shapes of shelves, books and frames. If you're placing plants on a shelf, make sure you don't over-clutter your space, instead create a vignette where each item has room to breathe.
