We've teamed up with our friends at Cellarmasters to put together 6 wines perfect for winter entertaining, and as a T&W member you're entitled to $50 off a mixed case or a case of a single variety. Whether you're a connoisseur or a quaffer, that's an offer not to be sniffed at. To help with your party planning, we asked Stuart Robinson, the Cellar Director at Cellarmasters for the lowdown on each wine, and then matched them with recipes from our very own food stylist Jono Fleming. Cheers!
This perfectly balanced antipasto platter (find out how to prepare it here) will work with the Henri Quilter Tasmanian Pinot Noir 2013. Stuart describes this wine as "the ultimate picnic partner", with "classic varietal characters of plums, cherries, forest floor and violets and spicy French oak adding another level of complexity." If you're looking for something lighter, try the Krondorf Growers Barossa Valley Rosé 2014, which Stuart says is "light crisp and refreshing."
A caramelised tomato pizza (Jono's recipe is here) will work with the Mitolo Junior By Frank Mitolo McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon 2011. It's from one of Australia’s hottest new wineries and, according to Stuart, it's "full of powerful blackcurrant, mint and chocolate flavours." If you'd prefer a white, try a rich variety like chardonnary - Cellarmasters's pick is the Bird in Hand Blackbird Chardonnay 2013. It's from the Adelaide Hills which is known for its chardonnay, and the makers, Bird in Hand, were named Adelaide Hills Winery of the Year at the Melbourne International Wine Competition, as well as Winestate magazine's 2014 Winemaker of the Year.
When winter really kicks in, it's time to pull out the big guns. May we suggest Jono's Coq au vin (click here for the recipe) paired with a big Barossa shiraz - Teusner 'The Riebke' Barossa Valley Shiraz 2013. The Riebke family has grown grapes in the Barossa for 6 generations and James Halliday rates this one 95 points. That's good. You should also try the Franklin Tate Estates Miamup Margaret River Cabernet Merlot 2013. Stuart Robinson says it has the classic regional flavours - "dusty blackcurrants with a spicy French oak backbone."
