Janganpa Jukurrpa (Brush-tail Possum Dreaming) - The Janganpa Jukurrpa, or common brush-tail possum Dreaming, is an important story that is celebrated by the Warlpiri people of northern Australia. The story is about a group of Janganpa ancestors who lived on a big hill called Mawurrji, where they would go out each night to search for food.
They would travel to different locations in search of ants & water. The story involves a Nampijinpa woman who gave her daughters to a Jupurrurla Janganpa for marriage but later ran away with them, causing the Jupurrurla to pursue them angrily & kill them with a stone axe. Today, the bodies of the daughters are represented by rocks at Mawurrji.
The Janganpa Jukurrpa is celebrated through traditional iconography in Warlpiri paintings, which use 'E' shaped figures to represent the tracks of the Janganpa & concentric circles to depict the trees in which they live & the sites at Mawurrji. The Janganpa Jukurrpa is an important part of young men's initiation ceremonies, & it belongs to both Jakamarra/Jupurrurla men & Nakamarra/Napurrurla women.
