Meet the artist Elsie Napanangka Granites Headshot
Elsie Napanangka Granites was born in 1959 in Yuendumu, a remote Aboriginal community in Northern Territory. She spent most of her life in Yuendumu and is an active member of the community. Elsie has been painting since 1987 and focuses on her father's Dreaming, Jayinki Jukurrpa. Although this jukurrpa is often associated with men’s ceremonial activity in that country it is also related to sites where women traveled to collect bush foods. Her work has been included in numerous exhibitions of Aboriginal Art. She has three children, many grandchildren, and one great granddaughter who she helps to raise. Elsie shares ancestral dreaming stories with them, passed down through generations, about her country, its features and its wildlife.
