We went behind the scenes with Inside Out at their latest Open for Inspection, to explore a gorgeous coastal family home on Sydney’s northern beaches that took just 13 weeks to transform.

Let’s be honest. Everyone loves the stickybeak factor of a real estate open house. Even better if it’s a newly renovated property hand-picked by a top interiors magazine. So when the Inside Out team invited us to their latest Open for Inspection tour, we jumped straight in the car and headed to the home of Hannah and Clyde Daish on Northern Beaches. Editor-in-chief Claire Bradley, Associate Editor and former T&W Journal editor Victoria Baker and The Block winner and interiors expert Shannon Vos were waiting outside the low-key yet sleek street frontage, complete with weathered timber panelling, black paintwork and a car by OFI sponsor Toyota Prius v parked out front.

Dowstairs hub
"I love the epic storage all through the house," says Claire as she leads us into the kitchen, where our group gathers around the expansive American oak island bench. The size of the island makes sense for the busy family of six who lives here, but it also acts as a warm focal point in the pared-back, concrete and white space, lit from above by a void with light well. Most of the joinery and timber furniture in the house was crafted by local business Mr & Mrs White  owners Nathan and Sasha White have joined us on the tour and offer insight into everything from the cabinetry to the stair treads.

Indoor-outdoor living
As we move through the ground floor, I'm impressed by the owners' decision to split the outdoor space in two with the rear living area extension. Counter-intuitively, it seems to creates more useable space, with sliding doors opening to an entertaining terrace and pool on one side, and lawn on the other (plus a bonus skate ramp for the kids tucked away down the side).

Master retreat
Thanks to the five years of planning that led up to its 13-week transformation, the whole house is carefully considered and economical with space, though Hannah and Clyde allowed themselves that luxury in the master bedroom upstairs. An expansive open bathroom with freestanding bath and bespoke copper tapware flows to a walk-through wardrobe, which in turn opens to the sleeping space. It's tranquil, breezy and light-filled – understated and resort luxe at the same time.
