Cheap build and manufacturer shortcuts

The product looks largely as described, comes flat packed, and the main base assembly is easy enough - but the lid assembly is a nightmare, mainly due to the manufacturer not pre-drilling any of the hinge or strut support holes. The instructions also claim that only a screwdriver is required for the screws, but assembling this without a powered drill/driver would be very difficult without the pre-drilled holes. All that is provided is some rough markings where the hinges should go (only on the lid, not on the base), so there's a bit of gues work involved. Hinges must be precise and if not exact, can cause the lid to be misaligned. Once you make the holes for the screws, it's hard to reverse if the lid is misaligned. And misaligned it was, partially due to the front MDF panel being slightly warped. The hinges provided are small and fiddly, resulting in the screws going into the lid only a few mm from the very edge of the MDF, which is not a strong build - For a few more cents the manufacturer could have provided some decent sized hinges that avoided this. Overall the unit once assembled is more or less as described (despite the slightly warped front panel), but in my opinion is overpriced for the low quality and shortcuts taken by the manufacturer to avoid cost. Quite disappointed. |
